In this role, you will lead on MacroPolo’s economic work. This includes, among other things, producing incisive analysis on macroeconomic and industry-specific issues, developing and executing on major research projects, and managing research assistants and interns.
You will be able to build on MacroPolo’s existing work and expand into new realms, including but not limited to comparative and thematic work in the Asia region. You will be expected to represent MacroPolo in media and at public conferences, as well as engage with our audience and users.
You should already have a solid understanding of the Chinese economy and trained in both quantitative and qualitative methods. You should have some record generating high-quality economic research/analysis, whether in the public or private sector, as this role is writing-intensive.
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, creative, and have a good nose for differentiated and compelling economic research for MacroPolo’s audiences that span markets, businesses, policy, and media. You will also have a desire to work with large datasets and leverage the latest technologies and tools to enhance your work.
In addition to working collaboratively with the analytical and creative teams, you should also be able to independently determine and execute your own research agenda and products, as well as publish under your own byline without excessive supervision. Part-time paid student fellow positions are available throughout the academic year as well as over the summer session to University of Chicago undergraduate and graduate students. SFs work closely with the MP team on projects that involve substantial analytical and data work across our domains. These positions are available for matriculated University of Chicago students only.

For those interested in the research track, you should have a clear idea of how your interest aligns with our core areas of politics, economy, technology, and energy. For those interested in the creative track, you should have or want to develop skills in design, marketing and distribution, web development, or multimedia.
We look for candidates with diverse skills, including language proficiency, quantitative analysis, illustration and design, computer science, writing and communication, among others. Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese may be desirable for certain research roles, but not essential depending on other qualifications.
We accept internship applications on a rolling basis throughout the year, as well as for specific openings that tend to start in the summer.
