The capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Nanning is also known as “Green City” because of its abundant tropical forestry and fruits. Since Nanning sits only about several hours drive from the Vietnamese border, the city has long served as an important hub for imports and exports to Southeast Asia. In 2017, the city reached a total trade of $4.1 billion, of which more than half were with Southeast Asian countries that are part of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The tropical scenery distinguishes Nanning from other Chinese cities and is more reminiscent of the lush landscape typically associated with Southeast Asia. The idyllic landscape and slower pace seem to mesh with a modest social life in the city, including a handful of bars, some of which are owned by expats. It is certainly a far cry from the cultural diversity and social dynamism found in coastal cities. Places of interest for visitors include Yanmei Ancient town and Qingxiu Mountain.
