Tianjin is one of four municipalities under the direct jurisdiction of the central government. The city has the largest port in northern China and therefore is a major hub for international trade, with total trade volume reaching $120 billion in 2017. In 2015, the city had established a pilot free trade zone aimed at further bolstering the domestic economy. Beyond trade, the city also has its share of high-end manufacturing, including an Airbus assembly plant and a leading Chinese battery producer, Tianjin Lishen Battery.

For nearly a century before the formation of modern China, multiple countries, including France, the United States, Germany, and Italy, established their own colonies in the city. The colonial history left Tianjin with numerous Western-style architecture that differentiates it from many other Chinese cities.
