Xiamen is a sub-provincial city in Fujian province, across from the Taiwan Strait. The city’s port handled over 10 million TEU of cargo in 2017, making it one of the largest ports in the world. Beyond shipping and logistics, the city’s economy also benefits from tourism, which contributed more than $18 billion to the local GDP in 2017. For instance, Xiamen Island possesses one of the world’s largest natural harbors in Yundang Bay, and its pedestrian-only Gulang Island is a top destination for young travelers.

The city is known for its mild climate, Hokkien culture, and better-than-average air quality, making it one of the top 10 most livable cities in China, according to a ranking by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It seems to have something on offer for everyone: an elevated 7.6 kilometers path for cycling enthusiasts, the Shapowei Art Zone for hosting artists, and cat-themed cafés for feline aficionados.
